Kalmar Container Handler
Inspection Guide

Heavy port/yard iron where the spreader, twistlocks, and massive tires are the cost. A failure here is expensive and dangerous.

Kalmar container handlers move loaded and empty containers in ports and intermodal yards. The spreader and its twistlocks are the safety-critical interface, and the boom, hydraulics, and very expensive tires carry the cost.

Known problem areas — what we check
Costly Safety Common Verify
Spreader & twistlocks Safety

The spreader and twistlocks must lock and release containers reliably.

CHECK Cycle the twistlocks and verify locking, sensors, and interlocks.

Boom / mast & cylinders Costly

The lifting boom and cylinders wear and leak.

CHECK Cycle the boom under load and check for drift and leaks.

Hydraulics & drift Common

The high-capacity hydraulics weaken with use.

CHECK Check function speed and drift under load.

Tires Costly

Container-handler tires are extremely expensive.

CHECK Inspect all tires for wear, damage, and matching.

Engine, transmission & brakes Common

The driveline and brakes take heavy loads.

CHECK Road test, check braking, and sample fluids.

Model-specific focus points
  • Cycle and verify the spreader and twistlocks
  • Check boom and cylinders under load
  • Test hydraulic speed and drift
  • Inspect the expensive tires
  • Road test driveline and brakes
Tools for this inspection
