Inspection Guide
The classic Duramax era behind the bulletproof Allison. The variant is everything — LB7 injectors, LLY overheating, the prized LBZ, then the LMM's emissions.
The 2001–2010 Duramax trucks built the engine's towing reputation, and the Allison transmission behind them is a major selling point. But the four variants of this era differ sharply: the LB7's injectors, the LLY's cooling, the sought-after LBZ, and the emissions-equipped LMM. Knowing the code tells you what to check.
LB7 injectors fail and dump fuel into the oil; they sit under the valve covers.
CHECK Check for a knock, fuel in the oil, excessive smoke, and a balance-rate test if possible.
The LLY runs hot when towing heavy in the heat.
CHECK Watch coolant temps under load and check the cooling system.
The LMM added a particulate filter and emissions controls that clog and fault.
CHECK Scan after-treatment, verify regen, and confirm hardware is intact.
The Allison is strong but suffers behind tuning and hard towing.
CHECK Check fluid and road test for slip or harsh shifts.
Front-end components wear under the heavy diesel nose.
CHECK Inspect steering linkage and road test for wander.
