The legend. Mechanically tough and emissions-free, so condition and age beat any model-year worry — but watch the CPS, cold-start, and turbo pedestal.
The 7.3 Power Stroke is beloved for its durability and simplicity, with no modern emissions to fail. Because the engine itself is so robust, an inspection is mostly about age, maintenance, and the handful of known weak spots: the cam position sensor, the under-valve-cover harness, and the turbo pedestal.
A failing CPS causes intermittent stalling and no-starts.
CHECK Ask about stalling history; many owners carry a spare CPS.
The harness and glow-plug system degrade and cause rough cold starts.
CHECK Check cold-start behavior and glow-plug operation.
The turbo pedestal and up-pipes leak exhaust and oil.
CHECK Listen for exhaust leaks and inspect the pedestal for oil seepage.
High-pressure oil system wear causes hard starting.
CHECK Check hot and cold start times and scan for ICP/IPR issues.
These trucks are old; rust and worn front ends are common.
CHECK Inspect frame, body, ball joints, and overall maintenance.
