Twin-turbo torque with thirsty habits — radiators crack, regens dilute the oil, and tuned trucks crack pistons. Short production run, real quirks.
The 6.4 Power Stroke replaced the 6.0 and brought twin turbos and a particulate filter. It makes great power but is notably hard on fuel, and its emissions regeneration cycle can dilute the engine oil with fuel. Radiators and tuning-related piston failures round out the concerns on these short-lived trucks.
The radiators crack and leak coolant.
CHECK Inspect the radiator for seepage and check coolant level and condition.
Particulate-filter regens push fuel into the oil, which can thin it and harm bearings.
CHECK Check the oil level for rising fuel dilution and smell the oil for fuel.
Aggressive tuning cracks pistons on the 6.4.
CHECK Ask about tuning history and check for blowby and codes.
Exhaust up-pipes and EGR components leak and fail.
CHECK Listen for exhaust leaks and scan for EGR codes.
