Ford Ranger
Inspection Guide

A capable midsize with the 2.3 EcoBoost and 10-speed. Watch for the oil-pan leak and transmission manners; light-duty by full-size standards.

The current Ranger pairs a turbo four with the 10-speed automatic and tows respectably for its size. It's generally solid, with a known oil-pan leak and the same 10-speed behavior found across Ford's lineup. We confirm the engine isn't leaking and the transmission shifts cleanly.

Known problem areas — what we check
Costly Safety Common Verify
2.3 EcoBoost oil-pan leak Common

The oil pan is known to seep and was addressed by a service bulletin.

CHECK Inspect the oil pan and gasket area for leaks.

10R80 transmission shifts Common

The 10-speed can shift harshly or hunt.

CHECK Road test through all gears and check fluid condition.

Carbon buildup (direct injection) Verify

Direct injection can build intake carbon over time.

CHECK Feel for rough idle on higher-mile trucks.

Frame & brake rust Common

Salt-state trucks corrode underneath.

CHECK Inspect frame and brake lines.

  • Inspect the oil pan for leaks
  • Road test the 10-speed
